Purpose of Events Committee
The Events Team aims to increase engagement for UCSF staff, clinicians, learners, faculty and overall community for education, networking, organizing and promoting events across campuses and departments. We develop a events schedule and plan at the start of the year, and then work out details and implement the events throughout the year. Past events have included In-person roundtable networking events, fireside chat with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Catherine Lucey, and EVCP Executive Director, Clarice Estrada, panel discussion on Women’s Mental Health Resilience, Pelvic Health workshops, and Professional Profile Pictures at various UCSF campuses.
Frequency of meetings
The Events team meets via zoom for 25 minutes twice a month to organize and plan for upcoming events and/or review recent events. The team also attends the monthly virtual meetings of the larger Women of UCSF Health Committee. Meetings occur during work hours.
Time involvement
In addition to 1-2 hours of meetings each month, tasks specific to the Events Team may require additional time that varies during the year in order to execute event-related tasks (e.g. research, attend/host events). We ask members commit to 1 year (Oct-Oct) of service that may include in person or virtual participation.

Angela May’s Bio:
I was born on Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines and although we were a military family, we lived outside of the base in a small subdivision of Angeles City, close to relatives. I had the privilege of learning what life was like both on and off the military base, and have wonderful childhood memories of our life on the Philippine Islands. In the summer of 1991, our lives were drastically changed after the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Pinatubo. I remember standing outside of the bus stop, waiting for regular bus driver to arrive, and instead our parents came to rush us out of the city. This major eruption sent ash and fragments of rock over 100,000 feet into the air. Clark Air Force Base and Subic Bay Naval Station were heavily damaged by ash from this eruption, the second largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century. My family was flown into an air base in Guam for refuge and then eventually assigned to a base in California. We moved a few more times before settling in the Bay Area where my father eventually retired after 20 years of service. My...

My journey with UCSF started in 2014, when I moved to San Francisco from Boston so that my husband could pursue his PhD with the UCSF in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. In 2017, I joined UCSF as a senior analyst in the Faculty Practice Finance team. Before joining UCSF, I worked for 8 years in similar roles in higher education. Wanting to broaden my skillset, I looked for finance positions at UCSF. As a member of the Faculty Practice team, I am responsible for supporting the development of the yearly budget, long-range plan, and benchmarking to make informed financial and strategic decisions. A significant part of my role is working in partnership with department directors and managers to help them understand their finances. These last 6 years have brought many challenges and growth, and I am thankful to be experiencing it with my team.

I found UCSF on my search for Nursing Graduate School programs focused on Nursing Health Policy. In 2011, I made one of the best decisions of my life and moved across the country from Orlando, Florida to San Francisco, California to obtain my Masters in Nursing Health Policy at the UCSF School of Nursing. During my graduate school tenure, I worked full-time in UCSF BCH Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as a direct patient care nurse. The Nursing Health Policy program was a unique and enriching experience that afforded me the opportunity to reside in Washington, DC for a summer during one of the most active legislative health policy sessions in our recent history. I completed my Masters in 2013 and decided to remain in the PICU as we were preparing to move to our new hospital in Mission Bay.

Cynthia Barginere
Cynthia is accountable for achieving our goals across all adult inpatient programs and key adult service lines. She will oversee the strategy, finances, quality, safety, work culture, and operations and management of clinical services for adult services for our Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion campuses. Cynthia will immediately focus on efforts to improve our inpatient throughput and optimize patient flow across all of our sites.
Cynthia has more than 20 years of experience in leadership positions in academic and complex teaching facilities, and in developing physician leader partnerships. She most recently served as COO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in Boston, where she was responsible for the institute’s $53 million profit and loss, and oversaw strategy, business development and operational execution. Prior to IHI, she was senior vice president, chief transformation officer for Rush System for Health, and senior vice president, chief operating officer for Rush Hospital.
Born and raised in New Kent County, Virginia, Courtney Macon earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fisk University and has since been a lover of things STEM. Her current position as a research technician in the Rosenblum lab at UCSF speaks to this. There she has worked in skin tissue immunology research and has been published in Science Immunology. She also has a passion for women’s health and wellness, with a special focus on the health and wellness of Black women and other women of color. She’s honored to join this International Women’s Day virtual panel and looks forward to sharing her insights and experiences.
