Anais' Bio:
I emigrated from Mexico at a very young age. I was met with barriers from having to learn English to figuring out how to pay for college. At 18, using my savings, I completed a Medical Assistant program which started me on a journey into healthcare. I will never forget the moment I stepped foot into the 400 ACC building at Parnassus and how privileged I felt to be there. I was given the opportunity to work in Ambulatory at DGIM as a Per-Diem Medical Assistant. With the amazing leadership and the encouragement from the exceptional Physicians and Nurse Managers I worked with, I continued my education while working full-time. Within a few years I became the clinic's Nurse Supervisor, but it did not end there. The Administrative Director at the time, Jason Selinger, was a great mentor who pushed me to continue my career growth. I applied to Women’s Health and, to my excitement, was hired as a Practice Manager. After a few years, Erica Rajabi, the Director at the time, gave me the opportunity to report to her as the Administrative Director for OBGYN. I have never been more in awe of someone so dedicated who continuously inspires me to be better. Now, 17 years from when I started, I am the Director of Women’s Health. Why did you decide to join the Women of UCSF Health's Committee?
As women in the medical profession, we stand on the shoulders of pioneers who broke barriers, shattered glass ceilings, and paved the way for our presence in this vital field.
I want to encourage women to draw strength from our shared experiences, empower one another, and continue to advocate for gender equity within the medical community. Each one of us is a source of inspiration, resilience, and innovation.
By embracing our roles as healers, leaders, and changemakers, we not only nurture our own aspirations but also inspire the next generation of women; our daughters, nieces, and sisters to dream big and achieve greatness in medicine.

Always 4 or more books at a time. I’m currently reading Shuggie Bain, The Artist’s Way, Letters to a Young Poet, and The Goldfinch.
What's an issue you think remains overlooked or under-addressed in terms of women in the professional world?
Empowerment around menstruation is so important. I’m very passionate about engaging in thoughtful dialogue with women about the cyclical nature of our bodies, and how we can work with our cycles to our highest benefit, breaking away from the negative, patriarchal narratives surrounding PMS, shame around our periods (and bodies more broadly), etc. Women’s bodies have the power to grow and birth new life, yet there is still so much that we don’t know about how our cycles benefit us, day to week to month. And don't get me started on maternity leave in this country...

My first introduction to the University of California was as a high school junior, visiting Berkeley for a regional debate tournament. Stepping off the charter bus from Fresno and onto Sproul Plaza, set in place the most fortuitous string of events. My grandparents had migrated to Oakland from New Orleans in 1932 so the bay area had been my father’s childhood playground and I very quickly determined that was my turn to soak up all that the Bay had to offer.
