Our Stories

Storytelling is what connects and brings us together. So let’s celebrate, inspire and empower each other by sharing our stories.

Emer Braddock

Assistant Director, Revenue Cycle Optimization

What’s your role at UCSF and what is your favorite part about it?

My role is Assistant Director in Revenue Cycle Strategy. I drive operational excellence by leading business process improvements and strategic initiatives that support Revenue Cycle goals. The best part of my role is collaborating with so many departments across the organization, and that I get work with such extraordinary individuals in Revenue Cycle Strategy. I love how deeply connected my work is to our True North pillars of Financial Strength, Patience Experience, Strategic Growth, and Our People.

What brought you to healthcare? Can you tell us about your professional journey?

I studied Public Health as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, before moving on to IT roles implementing electronic health record systems at Kaiser Permanente, New York-Presbyterian, and here at UCSF Health. After completing my Master of Public Health in Healthcare Management at Columbia University I made the transition to working in Revenue Cycle. I’ve had the opportunity to work in many roles, making some vertical and lateral transitions along the way. I love working in healthcare because I see my job connected to serving others and transforming care delivery. Though I’m not providing any clinical treatment, I strongly feel that, in my own way, I’m directly caring for our patients.

What advice would you give yourself early on in your career?

You can develop managerial and leadership skills outside of the office through volunteerism or serving on boards. Not only can you devote your time to a cause about which you can, but you can learn processes such as budgeting and strategic planning, and practice skills such as public speaking, influencing, motivating others, and the most critical (yet underappreciated) skill of all: listening. And don’t forget that you deserve a seat at that table, Emer! Your leadership is needed, and it’s important that you answer that call. You’ve been gifted with a unique voice—use it.

If you had to choose an anthem, what would it be?

My anthem is “Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia. The lyrics remind me that I have the choice to embody strength and foster resilience even when challenges come my way, and to listen to inner voice, especially when others may not believe in me as much as I believe in myself. Plus, that sweet bass drop gives me life.
