Christina's Bio:

I am a first-generation American, with a heritage that combines German and Dutch ancestry. My educational journey led me to UC Berkeley, where I earned dual Bachelor's degrees with honors and earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology. I am fluent in German, French, and English, and I have had the privilege of studying and working in both Germany and France. My passion for traveling has led me to explore four continents, nurturing my intrinsic curiosity and talent for connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Meeting new people and uncovering the rich tapestry of their unique life stories brings me genuine joy.

My unique skill set includes the ability to advocate for and empower individuals to recognize their inherent brilliance. This capability has proven to be of immense value in my current role as a Program Manager in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Mental Health Service. In this capacity, I collaborate with esteemed faculty on clinical and research endeavors related to PTSD, Substance Abuse Disorder, and, most recently, pioneering research about the impact of psychedelics on PTSD and Depression. A significant part of my role is guiding faculty members on their career advancement and promotion. I work closely with them to refine their CVs and highlight the profound impact and significance of their work.  From my experience, I have seen that many faculty members approach their work from a place of service, often downplaying and underestimating the extent of their contributions and I play a pivotal role in illuminating their accomplishments. This is an immensely fulfilling part of my role.

My proficiency in navigating diverse social scenarios, cultivating effective networks, advocating for important causes, and forming meaningful connections has been instrumental in my career. Over the years, I have taken on various roles, including mentoring young women, coaching individuals with ADHD, and providing compassionate counseling on a suicide prevention hotline. Currently, I serve as a Co-Chair of the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Diversity Committee Communications Task Force and Lead for the Women of UCSF Health Spotlight Team.

My true passion is empowering others by creating a nurturing space and sharing the wisdom I have gained from my life journey. My goal is to convey my message, ignite inspiration, and encourage others to let their innate brilliance shine. Much like a guiding light for the soul, I aspire to spark the inner light within others, helping them unlock their true potential. My hope is everyone feels seen in their life and often individuals do not give adequate time to being visible to themselves. As part of my own journey, I recently ventured into the world of literature as a published author of  Dear Younger Self and started the exciting journey of hosting the Ready to Land  podcast.

What advice would you give to a woman entering your field today?

First find a mentor for guidance, this is key to navigating your career. Join groups to expand your network and meet new people. Be open to volunteering for opportunities presented. It is also important to acknowledge your accomplishments and keep an updated Master CV to note everything you have done. Have a vision of where you want to go in your career and continue to learn and enhance your skillset.

Why did you decide to join the Women of UCSF Health's Committee?

To meet new women at UCSF and expand my network. To contribute and be of service. To highlight outstanding women at UCSF for their accomplishments and contributions and have them be acknowledged.

If you could go anywhere for a day, where would you go?

Paris, France. My favorite place in the world. I used to live there, first as a student, and after graduating from UC Berkeley, I returned to work in Paris for a few years. I love the city and for me it is a place where all my senses are heightened - so many beautiful sights, smells, tastes - the culture, language and history all combine to make it the perfect place for me.

What is your favorite movie or TV Show you have watched recently?

"Emily in Paris". Continuing with my theme of loving Paris, this show reminds me of when I worked at Christian Dior in Paris - the fashion, the personalities, the faux pas, the beautiful surroundings. It captures the "franglais" (French/English wording) and the great intercultural exchanges. This series is funny, witty, and charming all at the same time.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Hike, dance, travel and try new restaurants. I enjoy sporting events - Go Giants, Warriors, 49ers and CAL Bears and concerts! I enjoy meeting new people, networking, and making connections.
