Jennifer Dearman BN, RN, MBA

Director of FPO Expansion, Ambulatory Administration, Faculty Practice Office

Here is what Jennifer's nominator had to say about her:

I am writing to nominate a former Director of mine, Jennifer Dearman, to be featured as an exemplary leader. She possesses a remarkable set of attributes that make her an exceptional role model for women in healthcare.

One of her most outstanding qualities is her pragmatism. In the face of complex challenges, she consistently displays a practical and solution-oriented approach. Her ability to analyze situations objectively, identify key issues, and develop effective strategies has been instrumental in whichever team she leads achieving successful outcomes time and time again. Jennifer's pragmatism serves as a valuable example to all those who work alongside her.

Moreover, her kindness and compassion are truly remarkable. She leads with empathy, always taking the time to listen attentively and offer support to her team. Her genuine care for the well-being of her colleagues and patients fosters an environment of trust and understanding. Jen's compassionate nature shines through in her interactions, creating a positive and uplifting atmosphere that encourages personal and professional growth.

One of Jennifer's most impressive qualities is her strength under pressure that she probably honed from her days as an Emergency Department nurse. In times of crisis, she remains composed, focused, and resolute. Her ability to make tough decisions swiftly, while maintaining a sense of calm, is truly inspiring. Jen's strength under pressure not only brings stability to the team but also instills confidence in those around her.

Jennifer is an extraordinary leader who embodies pragmatism, kindness, compassion, and strength under pressure. Her leadership style sets a high standard for others to follow and her dedication to excellent patient care is commendable. I believe that featuring Jennifer Dearman as a part of Women of UCSF Health would not only honor her achievements but would also inspire others to strive for excellence in their own careers, like she has me.

Jennifer's Bio:

My nursing career began at a regional pediatric hospital in Ottawa, Canada. I spent the first 3 years as a new grad in the NICU and then found my true passion in the Pediatric Emergency Department at that same hospital.

Over the next several years while working in the ED I also enjoyed working in community health where I had the opportunity to do outreach clinics that targeted homeless adolescents.

In 1996 I immigrated to Southern California and began a 10-year span working in the Emergency Department at a Level 1 Trauma Center. I was promoted through various roles including Charge Nurse, Educator, Nurse Manager and Director at that hospital. One of the highlights of my career was building the pediatric emergency team and then working to open a brand new Peds ED at that hospital. That was my first opportunity to work on a healthcare construction project and where I realized that I really enjoyed working in leadership and building strong teams. I also discovered that I loved being part of a construction team creating physical spaces where we could influence the design to best care for our patients.

My next role was at another pediatric hospital in LA as their Director of Outpatient Services.  After leaving there I spent a year and a half working for the County EMS agency from where I was recruited by UCSF for the Emergency Department Nurse Manager role. I joined UCSF in 2010 and fell in love with the culture and amazing people that I get to work with every day. After 3 years in the Emergency Department, I accepted a role in Ambulatory Administration where I oversaw adult specialty clinics. In 2018 I took on a new role in Ambulatory as the Director of FPO Expansion. I am very fortunate that I have a really interesting role partnering with our Ambulatory leaders and our Strategy team to expand our UCSF footprint across the Bay Area. Every day is truly an adventure, and I am honored to be able to help create new spaces and build awesome teams that provide excellent care to our patients from the Peninsula to the East and North Bay areas.
