Camela's Bio:

My journey began in 2013 as a sales associate in a Gift shop in Parnassus, where I engaged with visitors and hospital employees. I assisted them in finding the perfect souvenirs and purchasing snacks, creating positive experiences. After 2 years, I transitioned to the Nutrition and Food Service Department as a Food Service Worker in Mission Bay. I worked as a cashier in the cafeteria and also served as a barista at Peet’s Coffee. This role allowed me to connect with patients, patients' family and hospital staff, understanding their needs firsthand. I also worked a part-time job at San Francisco International Airport in Bunmee as a front-of-house team member. My responsibilities included cashier, preparing sandwiches and meals for travelers and employees. I’ve won and received the Above and Beyond Customer Service award for the 2nd and 3rd quarter at San Francisco International Airport.

In 2018, I made another move within UCSF, this time to the Material Services Department as a Supply Chain Associate. As an ambassador, I’m responsible for inventory, track arrivals and reconcile supply needs in the department and other designated supply locations where assigned. Completes replenishment of the supply location via both manual and automated system. Our department serves nursing, patients, all ancillary departments and Material service 24/7. In 2021, I was promoted as a Supply Chain Lead for Night Shift. Our team focused on delivering and distributing supplies across various departments within the organization. We rounded and stocked oxygen tanks and equipment in the storage room. Collaborating with diverse co-workers enriched my professional experience and strengthened our impact. Working in customer service has given me the privilege to build rapport and connect with a diverse group of people. Whether assisting visitors, serving patients and patient’s families, hospital staff or collaborating with fellow employees, each interaction creates a positive connection. It’s heartwarming to know that you’ve made a difference.  Being able to assist customers and meet their needs is fulfilling.

What advice would you give yourself early on in your career? To a woman entering your field today?

Allow yourself to take risks. Be persistent and don’t be discouraged by obstacles and mistakes. Consider challenges as blessings and use them to develop yourself. Embrace the opportunities that change brings and learn from them. Remember, your journey is unique, and every step contributes to your growth. Approach each situation with an open mind, kindness and a positive attitude. Keep pushing forward and you’ll discover your own strength.

Can you tell us about a significant role model or mentor in your life?

My parents are my mentors and my guiding light. They helped me in all phases of my life. Their strength, love, courage, determination, kindness and unwavering support have shaped me into who I am today. They might not be with me physically, but I know their presence and impact in my life will always be in my heart forever.

Do you have a favorite song? If you had to choose an anthem, what would it be?

I love "Try Everything" by Shakira and my anthem would be "This is My Now" by Jordin Sparks

If you could go anywhere for a day, where would you go?

Iceland, to see the Northern lights.
