Madee's Bio:
I received my Bachelor’s in Nursing from San Francisco State University and began my nursing career at UCSF in 1991 as a new graduate nurse on the Neurology/Neurosurgery inpatient unit. I transferred from the acute care unit to the Neuro Transitional Care unit in 2004 where my management journey began. I took on the role of Assistant Patient Care Manager in 2008. There was quite a learning curve, but that experience shaped me into the leader I am today. Managing personnel is one of the most challenging aspects of the role, but also the most rewarding. Building relationships and trust amongst staff, providers, and the interdisciplinary team are critical not only to positive patient outcomes, but to the success and growth of the department. Then, in 2011 I obtained my Master’s degree from the UCSF School of Nursing.
I made a transition over to the outpatient world in 2017, bringing along all my knowledge and experience, while learning a different side of the continuum of care. UCSF Health has evolved in so many ways in the 30+ years that I’ve been here. Always putting our patients first was the key to navigating through all of the changes. My current role as the Administrative Director of a large surgical specialties department has its daily challenges. However, I continue to find fulfillment in leading our team in providing quality care to our patients and participating in the department’s growth. I’m fortunate to be a part of an exemplary team of physicians, providers, managers, and staff in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
What advice would you give yourself early on in your career? To a woman entering your field today?
The only constant in the healthcare field is change. Embrace that reality.
If you could go anywhere for a day, where would you go?
To a beach that has clear, warm water…somewhere tropical, but would have to be more than a day.
